Cassie Dunne and the red, white and blue have advanced at WUG |
Penn State's Cassie Dunne and Team USA didn't play at the World University Games on Thursday morning, but sometimes other games can be just as important as your own.
That was the case this time in Almaty, Kazakhstan, as Russia defeated Japan 10-1 to win Pool B and push the U.S. through to the semifinals
A Japan win in regulation would have left all three Pool B teams at three points in the round robin, with the Americans being at a tiebreaker disadvantage on the basis of goal differential.
In the semifinals, Team USA will take on 2009, 2011 and 2013 gold medalists Canada, which swept through a Pool A also consisting of China, Kazakhstan and Great Britain. The rematch of the semifinals at the 2011 World University Games in Erzurum, Turkey will take place at 5:30 Saturday morning in the eastern United States, and will be streamed on livefisu.tv.
The U.S. has now advanced to the semifinals in three of the four World University Games in which it has entered a team. The aforementioned 2011 tournament saw a loss to Canada, then another to Slovakia for the bronze medal. In 2013, Russia defeated Team USA in a shootout in the semifinals, but the red, white and blue recovered to win bronze over Japan in Trentino, Italy.
China joined Canada in advancement out of Pool A, thanks largely to a key win over Kazakhstan on Monday, and will play Russia in the opposite semifinal at 9:00 a.m. ET on Saturday. The winners of the two semifinals will then play for gold on Monday, while the teams they defeat will match up for bronze. The gold and bronze medal matches will be broadcast on livefisu.tv as well.
Kazakhstan, along with Japan and Great Britain will play a round robin set of games to determine fifth, sixth and seventh places.
